Small, ball-shaped birds, Little Grebes have reddish-brown faces in summer and a pale yellow dab on the base of their pointed bill. Male and female are similar, but in winter they moult and their reddish-brown feathers are replaced by much paler light coloured feathers.
Found in ponds and lakes, you can often see Little Grebes diving and surfacing a fair bit away from where they went down. Little Grebes have a distinctive call, a high-pitched rapid trill that tapers off at the end. When alert, they can raise their necks - looking less ball-like.
