The most common species of swan in the UK, Mute Swans have very large, S-shaped, white bodies, with a large orange bill. Male and female are similar, whereas juveniles (cygnets) are greyish-brown and sit on the mother's back when very young.
Found in ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water in most of the UK, Mute Swans are often aggressive to people and other animals - often making a hissing sound.
